HOUSTON, July 8 -- Imperial Oil Ltd. awarded Fluor Corp. a $1.5 billion engineering, procurement, and construction contract for infrastructure and offlease facilities for the first phase of the Kearl oil sands project, a surface mining and bitumen extraction operation about 70 km northeast of Fort McMurray, Alta.
Imperial expects the first phase to start producing in late 2012 at an average 110,000 b/d of bitumen.
In May, Imperial Oil said it was reactivating the $8 billion (Can.) Kearl project (OGJ Online, May 29, 2009).
