LONDON, Sept. 5 -- RWE AG and Samruk, Kazakhstan's state assets management holding company, will look at coal gasification and synthetic gas usage in northern and eastern Kazakhstan to unlock new energy sources in the country.

"A successful study could also provide RWE with opportunities for gas procurement in Kazakhstan in the long term," RWE said.

A company spokesman said the study, which was set up under a memorandum of understanding, would cover technical and market issues. "Oil in Kazakhstan is mainly in the west," he said. "We have no concrete deadline for the results, but both companies are focussed on bringing these out as soon as possible." He declined to comment on the cost of the study.

Samruk's focus is to create a development strategy for the nation and attract investors.
