Total subsidiary orders superlarge FPSO

HOUSTON, Feb. 28 -- Elf Petroleum Nigeria Ltd. has awarded Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (HHI) a turnkey project to build a superlarge floating production, storage, and offloading vessel valued at $1.6 billion. HHI expects to complete the FPSO by yearend 2011.

Elf will place the FPSO in 750 m of water in Usan field 100 km southeast of Bonny Island off Nigeria.

It is to be 320 m long and 61 m wide, with a depth of 32 m and will weigh 114,000 tons. It will have a production capacity of 160,000 b/d of oil and 5 million cu m/day of natural gas and will be able to store 2 million bbl of oil.

HHI said it will carry out all phases of the project from the engineering, procurement, and construction to the test runs. The company said it has completed at least one superlarge FPSO every year since 1997. Total awarded it five consecutive orders since 2005, when it won the first AKPO FPSO order.
