US rig count increases by 8

US drilling increased by 8 rotary rigs to 1,657 working this week, up from 1,353 during the same period last year, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.

HOUSTON, June 2 -- US drilling increased by 8 rotary rigs to 1,657 working this week, up from 1,353 during the same period last year, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.

Land drilling increased by 4 rigs, with 1,530 at work. Offshore drilling also increased by 4 rigs, to 96 in the Gulf of Mexico and a total of 103 in US waters. Activity in inland waters was unchanged, with 24 rotary rigs working.

The major producing states accounted for little of this week's increase. The rig count for Texas rose by 2 to 742, while Louisiana was up 1 to 198. Wyoming declined by 2 rigs to 96. Rig counts in the other states were unchanged at 182 in Oklahoma, 99 in New Mexico, 92 in Colorado, 34 in California, and 9 in Alaska.

Canada's weekly rig count fell by 32 to 293 rotary rigs drilling. That's down from 375 a year ago.
