Pogo acquires interest in Bakken shale

By OGJ editors
HOUSTON, May 9 -- Pogo Producing Co. acquired 46,000 net leasehold acres in North Dakota's Bakken shale, an emerging unconventional play that represents a new operational area for Pogo.

The new acreage position is in the Williston basin. Pogo expects to drill the first two horizontal wells on this new acreage during the fourth quarter. In the Bakken shale, resource rocks encase fractured middle member dolomitic siltstones at subsurface depths of 10,000 ft. Horizontal drilling is used.

Pogo Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Paul G. Van Wagenen said that his company has more than 275,000 net leasehold acres of unconventional resources in the US and Canada, including the Mannville and Ardley coalbed methane plays in Alberta, the New Albany shale in southwestern Indiana, and the Barnett shale in north Texas.
