    NIOC managing director Mehdi Mirmoezzi told news media May 24 that appraisal operations currently are under way in Ramin oil field in northeastern Ahvaz and in the gas layer of Balal oil field.

    IEOC Exploration BV and partners RWE DEA of Germany and INA Industrija Nafte dd Zagreb of Croatia have been awarded the East Kalabsha block in Egypt's North Western Desert. The block was offered in Egyptian General Petroleum Corp.'s 2003 bidding round.

    Reliance Industries Ltd., Mumbai, and Niko Resources Ltd., Calgary, are adding more gas discoveries and beefing up the drilling program on blocks in two widely spaced basins in the Bay of Bengal off eastern India.

    State-owned Oil & Natural Gas Corp. of India made a natural gas discovery off Andhra Pradesh in shallow waters of the Krishna-Godavari basin.

    Lukoil Overseas Holding Ltd. has abandoned its Yalama well, the first exploration well on deepwater Block D-222 in the Azeri sector of the Caspian Sea.
