Talisman building cogeneration plant at Alberta sour gas processing plant

By OGJ editors
HOUSTON, June 21 -- Talisman Energy Inc., Calgary, has begun building a $21 million co-generation plant at its Edson natural gas processing facility in Alberta.

The project marks the first co-generation plant for a sour gas processing plant in Alberta and the first retrofit of an existing gas plant to co-generation, Talisman said.

The 10 Mw plant will replace older equipment at the Edson processing facility with cleaner, more efficient technology. The amount of natural gas needed to operate the processing plan will be reduced by 12%, or 700 Mcfd, the company said.

The new cogeneration plant will produce 2 Mw of electricity more than is required to operate the gas plant. The extra power could power 1,000 homes. Talisman expects construction to be finished by Dec. 31.

The Edson facility processes about 200 MMcfd. Talisman plans $249 million in capital spending for the Edson area this year, including the drilling of 103 wells.
