Fertilizer plant expansion doubles Qafco production in Qatar

Qatar Fertilizer Co. has completed its fourth major expansion project, Qafco-4, at Messaied Industrial City, making Qafco the world's largest single-site urea producer. The expansion increased ammonia production by 50% and urea production by 65%, raising annual production capacity to 1.4 million tonnes of ammonia and 1.7 million tonnes of urea.

HOUSTON, June 9 -- Qatar Fertilizer Co. has completed its fourth major expansion project, Qafco-4, at Messaied Industrial City, making Qafco the world's largest single-site urea producer. The expansion increased ammonia production by 50% and urea production by 65%, raising annual production capacity to 1.4 million tonnes of ammonia and 1.7 million tonnes of urea.

Qafco is owned jointly by Qatar Petroleum Co. 75% and Norsk Hydro AS 25%.

The new 2 billion riyal production train was built by contractors Consolidated Contractors International Co. of Lebanon, Hollandsche Beton Groep NV unit Interbeton BV, and Chicago Bridge & Iron, The Woodlands, Tex.
