US drilling activity continues near 31-month high

US drilling activity continued to seesaw at a 31-month high level, down by 8 rotary rigs to 1,153 working this week, compared with 1,021 during the same period a year ago, Baker Hughes Inc. reported Friday.

HOUSTON, May 7 -- US drilling activity continued to seesaw at a 31-month high level, down by 8 rotary rigs to 1,153 working this week, compared with 1,021 during the same period a year ago, Baker Hughes Inc. reported Friday.

All of this week's loss was in US land operations, down by 8 units to 1,032 active. Activity in inland waters was unchanged at 23 rigs. Offshore activity also remained stable, with 98 rotary rigs working in the Gulf of Mexico and 98 in US waters as a whole.

Canada's rig count increased by 30 to 185 this week, up from 91 a year ago.
