HOUSTON, Apr. 13 -- The Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. awarded a $28 million contract to SNC-Lavalin Inc., Montreal, for engineering, procurement and construction management services to upgrade pump stations along the Trans Alaska Pipeline System.

Alyeska, operator of TAPS, previously received approval from the pipeline's corporate owners to invest more than $250 million in that upgrade. The project involves installing electrical pumps at four critical pump stations, as well as increased automation and upgraded control systems. SNC-Lavalin will handle the project from its Edmonton office.

TAPS transports crude 800 miles from Alaska's North Slope to shipment terminals in Valdez on Prince William Sound.
