Kerr-McGee to use truss spar for Constitution field deepwater hub development

By OGJ editors

HOUSTON, Jan. 23 -- Kerr-McGee Corp., Oklahoma City, said it will develop its 100%-owned Constitution field in the Gulf of Mexico with a truss spar similar in design to three of its existing spars to speed the field's development timetable. Constitution will be Kerr-McGee's sixth deepwater hub (OGJ Online, Apr. 24, 2003).

Constitution's truss spar design will resemble Kerr-McGee's Nansen, Boomvang, and Gunnison spars, which can process 40,000 b/d of oil and 200 MMcfd of natural gas. The new hull will be 98 ft in diameter and about 550 ft long. Technip-Coflexip Group of France will build it at its Pori, Finland yard, where the other hulls were fabricated.

The field, in 5,000 ft of water on Green Canyon Blocks 679 and 680, has estimated proved and probable reserves of 110 million boe, the company said. Total project cost is expected to be $600 million.

The field was confirmed by 11 wells drilled in predominantly oil-bearing sands in seven Pliocene reservoirs located at 12,500-15,000 ft. The 32° gravity oil lies in reservoirs having an average porosity of 28% and permeability of about 800 md.

Development facilities will include five dry trees and one subsea tieback. Well bores from previously drilled appraisal wells will be used as part of the final development plan.

First production is expected by mid-2006, with peak production expected to reach 40,000 b/d and 75 MMcfd in 2007.

The Future of US Refining

When Fri, Feb 6, 2015

Oil & Gas Journal’s Feb. 6, 2015, webcast will focus on the future of US refining as various forces this year conspire to pull the industry in different directions. Lower oil prices generally reduce feedstock costs, but they have also lowered refiners’ returns, as 2015 begins with refined products priced at lows not seen in years. If lower per-barrel crude prices dampen production of lighter crudes among shale plays, what will happen to refiners’ plans to export more barrels of lighter crudes? And as always, refiners will be affected by government regulations, particularly those that suppress demand, increase costs, or limit access to markets or supply.
