Fu Chengyu appointed chairman, CEO of CNOOC Ltd.

Fu Chengyu has been appointed chairman and CEO of CNOOC Ltd., Hong Kong, replacing Wei Liucheng, who resigned to accept a position with the Hainan Province provincial government in southern China.

HOUSTON, Oct. 20 -- Fu Chengyu has been appointed chairman and CEO of CNOOC Ltd., Hong Kong, replacing Wei Liucheng, who resigned to accept a position with the Hainan Province provincial government in southern China.

Fu earlier this month also was appointed president of China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC), the company's parent. Previously he had been vice-president of CNOOC and chief operating officer and president of CNOOC Ltd.

A graduate of Northeast Petroleum Institute in China, FU received a master's degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Southern California. He has 28 years of experience in the industry working in China for both local and foreign oil companies.

Fu worked in China's Daqing, Liaohe, and Huabei oilfields and joined CNOOC in 1982. He served as chairman of the joint management committee formed through joint ventures of CNOOC and international oil companies such as BP Amoco, Chevron Corp., Texaco Inc., Phillips Petroleum Co., Royal Dutch/Shell, and Agip SPA. He was vice-president of CNOOC Nanhai East Corp. during 1994-95 and in December 1995 was appointed vice-president of Phillips China Inc. and general manager of the Xijiang Development Project. In 1999, Fu became president of CNOOC Nanhai East.

In 2000, Fu became vice-president of CNOOC, and in 2001 he also was appointed executive director, executive vice-president, and president and chief operating officer of CNOOC Ltd. In August 2002, he was appointed chairman and chief executive officer of China Oilfield Services Ltd., a listing oilfield service vehicle of CNOOC.
