Peru mining executive becomes new energy and mines minister

By an OGJ Correspondent
LIMA, July 28 -- President Alejandro Toledo appointed Hans Flury as the country's new minister of energy and mines, replacing Jaime Quijandria who held the office for 2 years.

Quijandria was appointed minister of economy and finance, replacing Javier Silva Ruete now president of the National Reserve Bank.

A corporate attorney, Flury is vice-president of the National Mining, Petroleum, and Energy Society. He is a former president of that society and currently serves on the board of Southern Peru Copper Corp.

He also is vice-president of Confiep, a national federation of private business institutions. Flurry advocates a free market and the privatization of state companies.

Although he has been more active in the mining industry than oil and gas, Flury has identified backing the Camisea natural gas project as one of his first priorities.
