    US drilling activity continues to creep higher

    US drilling activity increased slightly this week, up 3 rotary rigs to 1,077 working, officials at Baker Hughes Inc. reported Friday.
  • 07/03/2003 -- Lukoil, Gazprom establish JV to develop Caspian Sea fields
    Russian oil and natural firms OAO Lukoil and OAO Gazprom Tuesday established a joint venture to develop the Tsentralnaya structure in the Caspian Sea along with Kazakhstan's ZAO NK KazMunaiGaz.

  • 07/02/2003 -- Talisman joins Total in Alaska NPRA exploration project
    Talisman Energy Inc., Calgary, has entered into an agreement with Total E&P USA Inc., to explore 360 sq miles of Total's lease in 10 National Petroleum Reserve Area blocks on the Alaskan North Slope. Operator Total acquired the acreage in two tracts in the government's May 2002 lease sale.
  • 07/02/2003 -- Petrobras charters offshore rigs, platforms following tax dispute
    Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras), Brazil's state-owned oil company, reported that it has signed international contracts chartering offshore drilling and production units despite the Brazilian Internal Revenue Service's contention (on the basis of the second article of Law 9,537/97) that such rigs cannot be classified as sea-going vessels and therefore should not be chartered but leased.

    Woodside Energy Ltd. has awarded a contract to Samsung Heavy Industries Co Ltd. of South Korea to construct the hull for a floating production, storage and offloading vessel for its Enfield oil development off Western Australia.

    Two affiliates of Kerr-McGee Corp., Oklahoma City, acquired 100% interest in nine oil and gas exploration and production licenses in the Blake Plateau basin about 100 miles north of Freeport, Grand Bahamas Island, company officials said Thursday.

  • 06/04/2003 -- Tartan: Silver Oak No. 1 well's Lower Carneros interval noncommercial
    Calgary-based Tartan Energy Inc. reported that it's test of the Lower Carneros interval of its Silver Oak No.1 well in Bakersfield, Calif.—the first interval effectively tested on the well—has determined the presence of oil and natural gas, but not at economic rates.
