Murphy Oil Corp. reported a significant oil discovery with the company's Kikeh Kecil No. 1 well, drilled on Block K off Sabah, Malaysia. Drilled in 4,460 ft of water, the well is 2.5 miles north of Kikeh field on a separate structural feature, the company said.

Sasol Petroleum International (Pty.) Ltd., Johannesburg—under a production sharing agreement with Mozambique's Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy—is undertaking an aggressive 2003 drilling campaign in the area of Temane and Pande natural gas fields, in Mozambique. The areas, both onshore, are northwest of Vilankulo, in Inhambane Province about 700 km north of Maputo.

Tulsa-based Syntroleum Corp., owner of a proprietary air-blown, gas-to-liquids process for converting stranded gas reserves to liquid fuels, plans to commercialize small, barge-mounted GTL plants to develop offshore natural gas assets in the 1-3 tcf range and to process associated rich gas that might otherwise be flared or reinjected.

Brazil's state-owned company Petroleo Brasileiro SA, in a bid to replenish its E&P portfolio, dominated Brazil's fifth round bids of oil exploration and production concessions organized by the National Petroleum Agency Aug. 19-20. Of the six companies participating, Petrobras was the only company bidding on deepwater blocks in the round.

08/01/2003 -- Quest inks 63,000 acre Kentucky coalbed methane lease from Alcoa
Quest Resource Corp, Oklahoma City, inked an agreement July 18 with Alcoa Inc. subsidiary Alcoa Fuels Inc. for a 1 year coalbed methane lease on more than 63,000 acres in Union, Crittendon, and Webster counties in western Kentucky. The lease will increase by 50% the total number of acres Quest has under lease.
