  • 11/14/2003 -- ConocoPhillips OKs Surmont oil sands project; plans 100,000 b/d of bitumen by 2012
    ConocoPhillips approved the $1.1 billion Surmont oil sands project 60 km southeast of Fort McMurray, Alta., and plans to start construction in early 2004. Initial bitumen production will commence in 2006, increasing to more than 100,000 b/d by 2012, ConocoPhillips said.
  • 11/14/2003 -- US rig count dips by 3 rigs
    US drilling activity dipped by 3 rotary rigs to 1,111 this week from last week, compared with the 2-year high of 1,115 for the week ended Oct. 17, Baker Hughes Inc. executives said Friday.
  • 11/13/2003 -- Pogo drills successful wells in GOM, S Texas, Thailand
    Pogo Producing Co., Houston, reported drilling nine successful exploratory wells: three in the Gulf of Mexico, two in South Texas, and four in Thailand.
  • 11/12/2003 -- Total reports start-up of Matterhorn field in Gulf of Mexico
    Total E&P USA Inc., an affiliate of French company Total SA, reported the start-up of Matterhorn oil field on Mississippi Canyon Block 243 in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico.
  • 11/11/2003 -- Esso, BHP Billiton to commence new Bass Strait drilling program
    In what is expected to be the largest combined E&P drilling program in the Gippsland basin in the Bass Strait off Victoria since the 1980s, Esso Australia Resources Pty. Ltd. and its 50:50 joint venture partner BHP Billiton Ltd. are preparing to locate and extract oil and natural gas from smaller fields that show potential and that are near existing infrastructure in the mature basin (see map OGJ, Nov. 13, 2000, p. 36).
  • 11/11/2003 -- Unocal completes Harvest appraisal well at deep shelf discovery
    Unocal Corp., operator of West Cameron Block 44 in the Gulf of Mexico, has drilled a successful appraisal well on its deep shelf Harvest natural gas field on the block, confirming the commerciality of the play.
  • 11/07/2003 -- US rig count rebounds to near 2-year high
    US drilling activity rebounded by 7 rotary rigs to 1,114 this week, approaching the 2-year high of 1,115 for the week ended Oct. 17, said officials Friday at Baker Hughes Inc.

    According to the international offshore rig counts provided by Baker Hughes Inc. for September 2003, offshore rig activity was up 13 rigs internationally since August and was particularly strong in Latin America and Asia Pacific, while offshore Europe activity was flat.

  • 11/07/2003 -- Cheal-1 production test positive in New Zealand
    Indo-Pacific Energy Ltd., operator of the Cheal-1 well in the Taranaki basin—on the west coast of New Zealand's north island—initiated a successful production test of the well Oct. 20 (OGJ, Oct. 20, 2003, p. 47). Oil has flowed at an average of 70 b/d through a 5/8-in.choke to on-site production and storage facilities.
  • 11/06/2003 -- Pemex receives no bid for Corindón-Pandura development
    Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), Mexico's national oil and gas company said Wednesday that it had received no bids for Corindón-Pandura, the fourth contract under its seven-contract Multiple Services Contract (MSC) program for development of nonassociated natural gas in the Burgos basin of northern Mexico (OGJ Online, Oct. 29, 2003).
  • 11/05/2003 -- Sonatrach, BHP Billiton begin first Ohanet gas production in Algeria
    First gas for export began flowing Oct. 27 from the Sonatrach and BHP Billiton Ltd.-operated wet gas development at Ohanet, Algeria. At peak production the $1 billion facility will treat about 710 MMscfd of gas and produce a maximum of 30,000 b/d of condensate and 26,000 b/d of liquefied petroleum gas (20,000 boe) for export, together with a stream of dry pipeline sales quality gas for Sonatrach.

  • 11/03/2003 -- Kinder Morgan to acquire Yates field interests from Marathon
    Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP has inked two purchase and sale agreements with Marathon Oil Corp. unit Marathon Oil Co. for KMEP to acquire Marathon's 42.45% working interest in its Yates oil field unit and also Marathon's 100% interest in the Yates Gathering System (YGS) in the Permian basin of West Texas for a total $225.5 million.

    Operating costs are increasing for producing fields on the Gulf of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf while shallow-water shelf production continues to decline, said Ziff Energy Group.

    Canada's ratification of the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change is expected to have minimal effect on the development of Alberta's oil sands resources, the New York-based Moody's Investors Service said.

    US proved reserves of natural gas and crude oil have increased for the fourth consecutive year, the US Energy Information Administration reported.
