12/26/2003 -- Noble Energy starts up gas production from Mari-B field off Israel
Noble Energy Inc. has begun natural gas production from giant Mari-B field in the Mediterranean Sea 15 miles off Israel, that country's first offshore natural gas production facility. Noble Energy expects production to increase to 100 MMcfd by the end of March 2004, with ultimate gross production to reach 170 MMcfd.

US drilling activity increased by 2 rigs with 1,114 rotary rigs working, up from 862 at this time a year ago, officials at Baker Hughes Inc. reported Tuesday.

Regarding conflicting reports about the direction of US natural gas production, Raymond James & Associates Inc. said, "the preponderance of the evidence supports the view that US gas production is falling by more than 4% on a year-over-year basis."

ChevronTexaco Corp. subsidiary ChevronTexaco Petroleum Co. signed an agreement with Ecopetrol the Colombian national oil company in mid-December extending their existing Guajira Area A Association contract and continuing natural gas production in Colombia's northeastern coastal region.
12/19/2003 -- West Navigator drillship breaks time record for drilling in Mauritania
West Navigator deepwater drillship has set a new drilling time record off Mauritania while drilling the Tiof West well in Chinguetti field for Woodside Mauritania Pty. Ltd., claims the drillship's owner Smedvig Rig AS. The drillship has been drilling three wells for Woodside in the area (OGJ Online, Dec. 2, 2003).

Brazil state oil firm Petróleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras) said it plans Friday to sign three contracts totaling close to $1 billion for the construction of its P-52 offshore platform to be installed in Roncador field in Campos basin off Brazil.
12/18/2003 -- North Sea Clapham development produces first oil
Petro-Canada, 100% owner and operator of Clapham field on Block 21/24 in the UK Central North Sea about 165 km east of Aberdeen, reported that first production of crude oil from the field was achieved in late November. The field is tied back to the Triton FPSO.

Kerr-McGee Corp. affiliate Kerr-McGee Oil & Gas Corp., Oklahoma City, is operator of the new hub.

BG Group reported Friday that production of oil from Karachaganak field in northwest Kazakhstan into the Caspian Pipeline Consortium export pipeline—along with sales at Novorossiysk—are not expected to resume until second quarter 2004.
12/09/2003 -- ExxonMobil begins deepwater Block 15 production off Angola
ExxonMobil Corp subsidiary, Esso Exploration Angola (Block 15) Ltd. (Esso), has initiated production from Xikomba deepwater field in deepwater Block 15 off Angola. Xikomba, the company's first production from the block, represents the first of several anticipated operated production facilities off Angola.

Oil markets appear to be edging back towards dominance by mundane physical fundamentals and away from incorporating a geopolitical price premium. If that trend grows in 2004, will the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries continue to succeed with a sustained price-defense strategy? Early indicators are that it will, albeit at a slightly lower price level than in 2003.
12/05/2003 -- Jasmim deepwater field production begins off Angola
Production has begun from Jasmim field on deepwater Block 17 about 150 km northwest of Luanda off Angola. Angola's state oil company Sonangol EP, Sociedade Nacional de Combustiveis de Angola is concessionaire, and Total SA subsidiary Total E&P Angola is operator of the field. Jasmim is the second of 15 discoveries on Block 17 to be brought on stream, following Girassol field in December 2001.

The Libyan National Oil Corp. (NOC) signed an exploration and production-sharing agreement (PSA) in Tripoli in November with a consortium consisting of Woodside Energy Ltd. subsidiary Woodside Energy (NA) Ltd., Hellenic Petroleum SA of Greece, and Repsol Exploración Murzuq SA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Madrid-based Repsol YPF.
