HOUSTON, Sept. 25 -- Kuwait Petroleum Europoort BV awarded a subsidiary of Foster Wheeler Ltd., Clinton, NJ, a contract for the revamp of a vacuum unit and hydrodesulfurization units at its refinery near Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

The Milan-based subsidiary Foster Wheeler Italiana SPA is providing engineering, procurement, construction management, and supervision services. Work has started, and completion is slated for autumn 2003.

The Kuwait Petroleum Europoort refinery has an existing crude oil capacity of 75,500 b/d (OGJ, Dec. 24, 2001, p. 103).

The vacuum distillation unit will be increased to 28,000 b/d from 22,500 b/d while three hydrodesulphurization units are being revamped at the same capacity to meet the European Union's more stringent specifications on diesel fuel.

"This is the latest in a series we have done for Kuwait Petroleum Europoort," said Umberto della Sala, president and CEO of Foster Wheeler Continental Europe. "The revamp work will enable the refinery to operate more efficiently."
