    Enron Corp. Friday said investment bank UBS Warburg AG was the successful bidder for its North American wholesale electricity and natural gas trading business. The private auction was overseen by a US bankruptcy judge.
  • 01/11/2002 -- Electric co-ops endorse FERC refund proposal
    Federal regulators monitoring the electricity markets should take "all steps necessary," including refunds, to protect consumers from market power abuse, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association said. In a FERC filing, NRECA also said the commission should assure the market the refund proposal will be applied "solely" to protect customers from such abuse.

    Stock in CMS Energy Corp. opened 3.74% lower Tuesday after the Dearborn, Mich., energy holding company Monday said 2001 earnings would be about 35¢/share below previous projections. CMS blamed warmer than normal fourth quarter weather, lower gas and electric sales, maintenance costs, and increased electric distribution repair costs due to storm damage.

    The Mackenzie Delta Producers Group and the Mackenzie Valley Aboriginal Pipeline Corp. have begun the project definition phase for the proposed Mackenzie Delta pipeline. The $3 billion (Can.) line would move gas from the delta to connect with gas lines in northwestern Alberta.

    Proposed federal rules requiring a single standard governing relations between gas and electric transmission suppliers and their energy affiliates could interfere with retail 'one-stop shopping,' the American Public Power Association said. FERC proposed uniform rules for natural gas pipelines and electric transmission suppliers and asked for industry comment last fall.

    Unocal Corp. said Monday that its 2002 capital expenditures will be unchanged at $1.7 billion, but a larger share would go for development projects. Development programs would get $1.1 billion, up from $900 million last year. Exploration spending would drop $100 million to $400 million.

    Natural gas pipeline operators turned up the heat in a dispute with producers over specifications for pipeline quality gas. The Natural Gas Supply Association asked FERC to look into whether pipelines are using gas quality specifications to restrict gas shipments. The Interstate Natural Gas Association of America responded the charge 'hardly bears discussion.'
  • 01/04/2002 -- Gas group backs environmental lawsuit to impel alternative fuels use
    The Natural Gas Vehicle Coalition has joined environmental groups calling for the federal government to comply with a decade-old law designed to reduce oil imports by boosting alternative fuel vehicle fleets. Several agencies have admitted noncompliance, the gas group said.
