  • 01/22/2002 -- California Power Authority proposes 'green' electricity strategy
    The state-funded California Power Authority said it will meet California's need for 8,000 Mw of new capacity by 2006 with energy efficiency programs and renewable energy projects. In a report to Gov. Gray Davis, the newly created state entity also predicted its plan will reduce natural gas consumption by $10-$15 billion.

    Norway will lose 1 million bbl of oil production over the next week following the discovery of corrosion damage to a pipe in the flare system on the Statfjord C platform. Operator Statoil ASA will close down the field as well as the satellites Statfjord East, Statfjord North, and Sygna for at least 5 days.
  • 01/22/2002 -- US solicits bids to fill strategic reserve with Gulf of Mexico royalty oil
    The US Minerals Management Service last week began soliciting written bids from prequalified companies to fill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve with federal royalty oil from Gulf of Mexico fields. Rather than purchase oil on the world market, MMS plans to collect 22 million bbl between this April and March 2003 by dramatically expanding its royalty-in-kind program.

    Statoil ASA is to use a new type of welded pipe, costing 20% less than conventional seamless pipe, for the Kvitebjørn oil pipeline, which will be laid between the Kvitebjørn gas and condensate field and Troll Oil Pipeline II in the North Sea.

  • 01/17/2002 -- Con Edison says Sept. 11 response cost $400 million
    New York's Consolidated Edison Inc. Thursday estimated its emergency response to the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center will cost $400 million. Con Edison said its insurers will cover an estimated $65 million of the costs. The company is seeking federal government reimbursement of the remaining costs.
  • 01/17/2002 -- Kinder Morgan raises 2002 earnings estimates
    Kinder Morgan Inc., in a difficult year for the economy and particularly for energy companies, reported 2001 earnings of $225.2 million or $1.96/share on revenue of $1.1 billion, beating analysts' expectations of $1.90/share. The company increased 2002 earnings guidance to $2.55-$2.65/share from $2.40-$2.50/share.

    ArctiGas Resources LP, Calgary, has filed a preliminary information package with Canada's National Energy Board for a single pipeline system to move gas from the Canadian and US Arctic.

    Plains All American Pipeline LP will again expand its Cushing, Okla., terminal, to 5.3 million bbl of oil capacity. The third expansion will add 1.1 million bbl of storage and cost $11 million.
  • 01/16/2002 -- Indonesian gas company seeks funding for four pipeline projects
    Indonesian national gas company PT Perusahaan Gas Negara will need to raise $2.95 billion for four pipeline projects to be completed by 2007, said Pres. W.M.P. Simandjuntak, quoted by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' news agency.
  • 01/15/2002 -- FPL plans 1,900 Mw of gas-fired generating capacity
    Electric utility Florida Power & Light Co. proposed building 1,900 Mw of combined cycle gas-fired capacity by 2005 to serve an additional 40,000 consumers and maintain a 20% reserve margin. FPL didn't say when it expected to begin construction or estimate the cost of the proposed plants.
  • 01/15/2002 -- Bison plans $800 million (Can.), insulated bitumen pipeline
    Bison Pipeline Ltd. is planning to build an $800 million (Can.), 516-km pipeline to transport bitumen from the Athabasca oil sands to the Edmonton, Alta., area. The insulated system would be able to ship bitumen with minimal use of diluent.
  • 01/15/2002 -- US officials, companies to confer in February about Arctic gas pipeline
    White House officials and US legislators will meet with producers and pipeline companies early next month to review regulatory obstacles that could delay or postpone a new Arctic gas pipeline, according to industry officials. David Welch, BP PLC's president of Alaska-Canada Gas, said the meeting will be in early February.

    UBS Warburg agreed to take over Enron's gas and electric trading operation without paying Enron's creditors any money up front. Louis Gagliardi, analyst with John S. Herold, Stamford, Conn., said winning back lost trading business will be difficult.
  • 01/15/2002 -- Pertamina, Petronas to hold gas export talks next week
    Malaysia's Petronas is in talks with Indonesian state company Pertamina to buy 1 bcfd of gas for 20 years from fields in the South China Sea. The source of the South China Sea contract would be the ExxonMobil Indonesia Inc.-operated Block Alpha-D.

    Indian Petroleum Minister Ram Naik has said that plans to deregulate the oil and gas industry on Apr. 1 are on schedule. He said a draft bill to establish a Statutory Petroleum Regulatory Board was being finalized.

  • 01/14/2002 -- FERC's Brownell calls for strengthened market monitoring role
    Federal Energy Regulatory Commissioner Nora Mead Brownell urged the agency to strengthen its oversight of potential market power abuse. But she also said there was no point to dragging out cases unnecessarily. Brownell made the recommendations in a case involving El Paso Natural Gas.
