    In New York Tuesday, energy futures prices stabilized in trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The February contract for light, sweet crude, the US benchmark, edged up 1¢ to close at $18.90/bbl, while the March contract stood at $19.44/bbl, up 3¢.
  • 01/15/2002 -- OSHA recommends Motiva be fined more than $259,000 for fatal accident
    The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommended fines of more than $259,000 for Motiva Enterprises LLC for problems relating to a July 2001 fatal incident at its then-152,000 b/d Delaware City, Del, refinery. Motiva said it would vigorously defend itself against the citations.

    Holly Corp. subsidiary Navajo Refining Co. LP has completed the expansion of its petroleum products terminal at Moriarty, NM. The expansion added gasoline and jet fuel to existing diesel fuel delivery capabilities.
  • 01/14/2002 -- Flint Hills to invest in sulfur equipment for Corpus Christi refinery
    Flint Hills Resources LP, Wichita, Kan., will invest $145 million in upgrades to its 300,000 b/d Corpus Christi, Tex., refining complex. Flint Hills will begin engineering and construction of a sulfur-processing unit within the next 6 months.

    Fears that air pollution from oil and gas-fired electric generation would surge in California this past summer never materialized, state officials said. Nitrogen oxide emissions actually declined 24% between June and August 2001, compared to the same period in 2000, according to findings of the California Air Resources Board.

    Valero Energy Corp., San Antonio, will upgrade its 220,000 b/d Texas City, Tex., refinery at a cost of $300 million. The upgrade, which includes a 45,000 b/d delayed coker facility, will allow it to process the Maya crude it arranged to take from a Pemex affiliate.

    Florida energy holding company TECO Energy Inc. Wednesday said it is making progress lining up $1.2 billion to complete two power projects for which an Enron Corp. subsidiary is serving as construction contractor. If the proposal isn't approved by Jan. 11, TECO and its joint venture partner Panda International Inc., Dallas, Tex., have until Jan. 31 to find another lender.

    The Canadian government has begun a 60-day public comment period on draft regulations that would reduce sulfur content of diesel fuel by 95% to a 15 ppm maximum. The proposals, which would align with the US's diesel requirement timeline, are part of Canada's Clean Air Agenda.
