  • 01/28/2002 -- Alberta Energy, PanCanadian announce $27 billion (Can.) merger
    Alberta Energy Co. Ltd. and PanCanadian Energy Corp. plan to merge during April into a $27 billion (Can.) company to be called EnCana Corp. The two companies said EnCana would be the world's largest independent oil and gas company in terms of enterprise value, reserves, and production.
  • 01/25/2002 -- Louisiana regulators want electricity deregulation cost estimate
    Louisiana, which up to now has held off deregulating the electric power industry, appears to be reconsidering that position or is, at least, keeping its options open. The Louisiana Public Service Commission (PSC) recently asked investor-owned electric utilities to estimate how much it would cost to make the transition to a competitive retail market.

    US law enforcement officials Thursday announced a proposed $5.5 million settlement with Murphy Oil USA Inc. for alleged clean air and water violations at the sulfur recovery unit in its 33,250 b/d Superior, Wis., refinery.

    Valero Energy Corp., San Antonio, vowed Thursday to fight a federal lawsuit filed this week by a subsidiary of Unocal Corp. that claims Valero infringed Unocal patents for reformulated gasoline.

    International energy futures prices continued to climb Wednesday, spurred by indications that members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries are still dissatisfied with current price levels and may favor another production cut.
  • 01/23/2002 -- Unocal sues Valero for alleged infringement of gasoline patents
    A subsidiary of Unocal Corp. sued Valero Energy Corp., San Antonio, for alleged infringement of its reformulated gasoline patents. Unocal is asking 5.75¢ for each gallon of gasoline produced by the alleged infringement, with the total to be tripled as punishment.

  • 01/22/2002 -- Funding for Union, Gila River projects resumes, sponsors say
    Construction funding has resumed on the 2,200 Mw Union and 2,200 Gila Bend power plants, the nation's two largest merchant energy projects, TECO Energy Inc. and Dallas-based Panda Energy International Inc. reported Tuesday. Funding for the $1 billion projects was halted because Enron Corp. had guaranteed the construction company's loans.

    Russian firm Yukos Oil Co. will acquire a 77.5% interest in and operatorship of the Federovskoye exploration block in Kazakhstan. First International Oil Corp., Houston, which acquired the block in 2000, will participate in exploration activities with Yukos.

    US gasoline prices remained basically unchanged at $1.11/gal for the week ended Jan. 11 after rising for 3 weeks in a row, said the American Petroleum Institute.
  • 01/17/2002 -- Duke to slow power plant construction program
    Duke Energy Corp. Thursday said it has slowed its power plant construction program and now expects to build 18,000 Mw of generating capacity during the next 4 years, down from the 26,000 Mw construction program previously reported. Group Vice-Pres. Harvey Padewar said 11 plants representing 6,000 Mw will be completed this year.

    State-owned Turkmen oil and gas company Turkmenneftegas has awarded Technip-Coflexip Group a 130 million-euro contract for the design and construction of a diesel hydrotreating plant at its 116,477 b/d refinery at Turkmenbashi.
