Total awards Carina-Aries contracts to J. Ray McDermott

Total Austral SA, a subsidiary of TotalFinaElf SA, has awarded subsidiaries of J. Ray McDermott International Inc. contracts worth $160 million for two natural gas production platforms and related pipelines to be installed off Argentina.

HOUSTON, Dec. 3 -- Total Austral SA, a subsidiary of TotalFinaElf SA, has awarded subsidiaries of J. Ray McDermott International Inc. contracts worth $160 million for two gas production platforms and related pipelines to be installed off Argentina.

Affiliates of J. Ray McDermott will design, engineer, procure, construct, and install facilities for Total's Carina and Aries field development project 80 km east of Tierra del Fuego in the South Atlantic Ocean.

The Carina-Aries development should cost $400 million (OGJ Online, Oct. 19, 2001).

One wellhead platform will be installed in 80 m of water and the other in 60 m of water. The affiliates will also install 100 km of offshore flowlines and related chemical injection pipelines.

JRM said the offshore pipeline installation will be the most southerly ever completed.

J. Ray McDermott Engineering will design platform facilities, and Mentor Subsea will complete the pipelines. Platform decks will be fabricated at J. Ray McDermott's TNG facility in Veracruz, Mexico, while platform jackets will be built at the company's Harbor Island, Tex., fabrication yard. Installation of the platforms and pipelines will be completed by the DB-60.

Fabrication should begin in March 2002. Installation should begin in November 2002, and production should begin in the summer of 2003.
