HOUSTON, Nov. 6 -- Horizon Pipeline Co. has begun building a $79 million northern Illinois natural gas pipeline.

Horizon Pipeline is a joint venture of Nicor-Horizon, a subsidiary of Nicor Inc., and Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America (NGPL), a subsidiary of Kinder Morgan Inc.

The project includes the construction of 27 miles of 36-in. pipe, the lease of capacity in 46 miles of existing pipeline from NGPL, and the installation of gas compression facilities.

Horizon Pipeline will be able to transport 380 MMcfd from near Joliet into McHenry County, connecting the emerging supply hub at Joliet with the northern part of the Nicor Gas distribution system and the existing NGPL pipeline system.

Nicor has committed to transport 300 MMcfd on the line (OGJ Online, July 18, 2001).

Project completion is projected for April 2002.

"We are pleased that the project continues to move forward on schedule," said Scott Parker, vice-president of both NGPL and Horizon. "This pipeline will meet the needs of the traditional heating load customers in northern Illinois in conjunction with serving as a platform for further growth in infrastructure."
