HOUSTON, June 12 -- Mossgas (Pty.) Ltd. has awarded Foster Wheeler South Africa (Pty.) Ltd. an engineering, procurement, and construction contract for a $16.8 million low aromatics distillate plant in South Africa.

Mossgas is South Africa's state-owned gas-to-liquids producing company.

The plant, to be built at Mossel Bay, will produce 70,000 tonnes/year of low aromatic diesel and kerosine for the export market, probably the US and Europe.

The plant is based on an Institut Français du Pétrole license.

The project also includes new tanks at a Mossgas refinery and tank farm, plus a 2-km subsea pipeline from the tank farm to an existing conventional buoy mooring for loading into tank ships, said Foster Wheeler.

Work on the project has already begun. The plant will begin production in October 2002.
