HOUSTON, June 25 -- Chevron Phillips Chemical Co. and Qatar Petroleum plan to build a petrochemical plant at Ras Laffan in Qatar, said the two companies.
The project involves a 1.2 million tonne/year ethylene cracker, a 750,000 tonne/year polyethylene plant, and associated utilities and offsite facilities.
The plant, which should be completed in 2006, will use ethane feedstock from Qatar's North field. It will use Chevron Phillips' proprietary loop process technology.
Chevron Phillips and Qatar Petroleum also are cooperating in the Qatar Chemical Co. Ltd. joint venture, which is building a 500,000 tonne/year ethylene plant, a 450,000 tonne/year polyethylene plant, and a 47,000 tonne/year hexane-1 plant in Mesaieed, Qatar. This plant is on schedule for a third quarter 2002 startup.

The 50:50 Phillips Petroleum Co. and Chevron Corp. joint venture is headquartered in Houston.
