LIMA, Apr. 5--Peru is setting up a committee to auction a 2 million cu m/day Camisea take-or-pay natural gas contract held by Electroperu, the state electricity company.

The Camisea natural gas project, 500 km east of Lima, is due on stream by late 2003 or early 2004.

Electroperu signed the contract with the Camisea committee in January 2000, following the inability of the committee to reach a take-or-pay agreement with private electricity generators.

At the time the committee was seeking investors for the development of the project, which was being delayed by the lack of a sizeable market for the gas.

The contracts for the development of the field and transportation of production were signed in December (OGJ Online, Dec. 11, 2000).

The Argentine firm Pluspetrol operates the consortium to produce the Camisea gas while Tecgas, a unit of the Argentine firm Techint SA, operates the group to transport and distribute the liquids and gas.

The winner of the tender will have to separately negotiate prices for the transportation and distribution of the gas.
