    Almost 25 years ago, reports appeared that a giant discovery had been made in the Atlantic waters to the west of Scotland. Previously, all activity off northern Europe had been in the North Sea to the east.
  • 09/05/2001 -- Dominion, Williams sign pipeline deal for Devils Tower field
    Dominion Exploration & Production Inc. and Pioneer Natural Resources Co. have signed an agreement with Williams Cos. Inc., Tulsa, for infrastructure for deepwater Devils Tower field in the Gulf of Mexico. The companies said the agreement was the first of its kind for the gulf.
  • 09/27/2001 -- Gas pipeline project proposed for Williston basin
    Williston Basin Interstate Pipeline Co., Bismark, ND, Thursday said it plans to build a 245 mile, 16-in., gas pipeline across Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota. The line would extend from a point 14 miles north of Gillette, Wyo., to near Killdeer, ND. Capacity would be 80-120 MMcfd.

  • 09/07/2001 -- Phillips considers siting LNG plant off Niger Delta in Nigeria
    Phillips Oil Co. (Nigeria) Ltd., said Friday it signed a memorandum of understanding with coventurers, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. and Nigerian Agip Oil Co., to develop a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Nigeria.
  • 09/06/2001 -- USGS hikes estimate of Powder River basin coalbed methane resources
    The US Geological Survey has slashed estimates of Uinta-Piceance basin coalbed methane resources, but substantially raised them for the Powder River basin. The former dropped to 2.32 tcf from 10.7 tcf in 1995 while the latter rose to 14.26 tcf, up from 1.11 tcf.
  • 09/05/2001 -- TransCanada, National Fuel plan Northwinds gas line to US Northeast
    TransCanada PipeLines Ltd. and National Fuel Gas Co. plan to develop the Northwinds natural gas pipeline from Kirkwall, Ont., to the Ellisburg-Leidy area of Pennsylvania. The 215-mile, 30-in., 500 MMcfd line would cost up to $400 million.

    There are plenty of US supplies of oil and refined products and no need for a sharp spike in retail prices in the wake of terrorist attacks on US targets, industry officials and analysts said Wednesday.

    Southern LNG Inc., a subsidiary of El Paso Corp., began an open season to expand its Elba Island liquefied natural gas receiving terminal near Savannah, Ga., by 80%. The planned in-service date for the expansion is 2005.

    Some US oil companies are worried Washington policymakers are neglecting Middle East tensions, which they say could jeopardize the industry's sizeable investments in Arab countries. Lobbyists recently met with staff members of US Vice-Pres. Dick Cheney to discuss their concerns.

    A Cambridge Energy Research Associates analyst said Friday competition from other fuels has added uncertainty to the long-term future of the US gas market.Several speakers at the GISB meeting said they expect a slowing economy, at least short term, in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, DC.
  • 09/25/2001 -- Canadian oil mergers, acquisitions doubled in first half of 2001
    A spate of takeover deals has made Canadian independents with significant natural gas and land positions an endangered species. Sayer Securities Ltd. said the first half saw more than 70 merger and acquisition deals totaling $21 billion (Can.).

    Diversified energy company Williams Cos. Inc. plans to continue growing aggressively next year with a capital expansion budget that will be "very robust," Chairman Keith Bailey said Thursday.
