  • 10/10/2001 -- Senate leaders bypass committees to move energy legislation to floor
    Senate leaders have opted to bypass the committee process to bring energy policy legislation to the floor this fall -- a bill that will not propose leasing of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge coastal plain. Instead, Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) will offer a proposed bill in the near future.

    Australian company Queensland Fertilizer Assets Ltd. has contracted with a unit of Tipperary Corp., Denver, to purchase up to 260 bcf of gas over 20 years, beginning in 2004
  • 10/09/2001 -- DOE urges antitrust protection for oil industry security effort
    A US Department of Energy official said Tuesday that energy companies should be given legal protection to cooperate on security measures. Ms. Lee Otis, DOE general counsel, testified at a Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing.
  • 10/09/2001 -- Chevron and Texaco complete long-delayed, $35 billion merger
    Texaco Inc. and Chevron Corp. said their stockholders approved the $35 billion merger of their companies, which was completed later Tuesday. Under the deal, Texaco stockholders will receive 0.77 shares of ChevronTexaco stock for each Texaco share.

  • 10/09/2001 -- Texaco completes deals to divest interests in Equilon, Motiva
    Shell Oil Co. said Tuesday it has signed a deal to buy Texaco Inc.'s 44% share of Equilon Enterprises LLC, making it the 100% owner. Shell and Saudi Refining Inc. will acquire Texaco's 35% share of Motiva Enterprises LLC, making both a 50% holder in Motiva.
  • 10/08/2001 -- FERC orders partial refunds for July power sales in California
    Federal regulators denied requests by four power producers to sell electricity at prices exceeding a cap in July in California and other western US markets and ordered partial refunds for that month's sales. FERC said the companies either offered inadequate reasons for charging above-market prices or failed to file their cost justifications with the agency in time.

  • 10/08/2001 -- NW gas utility confirms deal to buy Portland General from Enron
    Northwest Natural Gas Co. will borrow most of the $1.8 billion purchase price to buy Portland General Electric Co. from Enron Corp. The merger of the two Oregon utilities was widely rumored on Wall Street last Friday.
  • 10/08/2001 -- AEP to buy UK power plants from Edison Mission
    American Electric Power Co. Inc. Monday said it agreed to buy 4,000 Mw of coal-fired electric generation in the UK from Edison Mission Energy, a unit of Edison International, for $960 million. The largest US power producer said it is buying the 2,000 Mw Fiddlers Ferry and the 2,000 Mw Ferrybridge plant plants for abour $200/kw.

    Energy futures prices weakened in trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange Friday, in part because of oil supply concerns. Speculation about informal talks in Spain among Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries member states kept circulating throughout the session.

    Devon Energy Corp., Oklahoma City, and Mitchell Energy & Development Corp., The Woodlands, Tex., said Friday their directors amended the merger agreement between the two companies to eliminate the risk that the recent decline in Devon's stock price might prevent issuance of certain tax benefits conditional to that transaction.

    Nance Petroleum Corp., a subsidiary of St. Mary Land & Exploration Co., Denver, will pay Choctaw II Oil & Gas Ltd., Houston, $41 million for oil and gas properties in Montana, North Dakota, and Wyoming.
  • 10/05/2001 -- Security overhaul proposed at US nuclear power plants
    Armed security guards could use deadly force to protect US nuclear electric power facilities under a bipartisan bill introduced in the US House by Reps. Billy Tauzin, (R-La.), chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, and ranking member John Dingell (D-Mich.). The nuclear industry said it is evaluating the proposal.
  • 10/05/2001 -- US 9th Circuit Court allows RFA to intervene in California oxygen lawsuit
    The US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals granted fuel ethanol supporters a voice in California's legal debate of reformulated gasoline. The state said the US Environmental Protection Agency should not have denied California's request to waiver the oxygenate standard from RFG under federal clean air rules.
