  • 10/18/2001 -- Halliburton, DSND to merge subsea operations in joint venture
    Halliburton Co., Dallas, and subsea contractor DSND Subsea ASA, Grimstad, Norway, agreed to form a joint venture that will combine their subsea interests in the upstream oil and gas industry. The proposed deal is subject to board and regulatory approvals.
  • 10/17/2001 -- Shell pursues new solar production process and unconventional geothermal project
    Continuing its efforts in renewable energy projects, a unit of Royal Dutch/Shell Group formed a joint venture with Akzo Nobel to pilot a new low-cost process to mass produce flexible solar cell panels. Shell also announced last week an unconventional geothermal project in El Salvador that would produce power by tapping heat from "hot rocks" beneath the surface of the earth.
  • 10/17/2001 -- EPA launches partnership to promote cogeneration
    The US Environmental Protection Agency has launched the Combined Heat and Power Partnership to promote cogeneration as an alternative to conventional electricity generation.
  • 10/16/2001 -- Enron reports third quarter loss on $1 billion charge for nonenergy assets
    Enron Corp. reported a third quarter loss of $618 million after taking $1 billion in charges. The charges mostly resulted from writedowns on the value of Azurix Corp., New Power Co., and Broadband Services. Enron's core energy businesses, however, reported operating income of $393 million on $47.6 billion of revenue compared with $292 million on revenue of $30 billion for last year's third quarter.

    Energy futures prices continued to decline, although at a slower rate Monday, in nervous international markets. The November contract for benchmark US sweet, light crudes dropped 21¢ to $22.29/bbl on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
  • 10/15/2001 -- As energy costs fall, utilities seek to lower electricity, gas rates
    Southwest Gas Corp. Monday asked Nevada state regulators to lower rates for natural gas customers by at least 10%. NSTAR Electric & Gas Co. asked the Massachusetts Department of Telecommunications and Energy to cut electricity rates by as much as 27% for certain customers.

    Chuck Watson, CEO of Dynegy Inc., sees a turnaround in broadband market because that industry has 'touched bottom' and demand will increase. The tragic events of Sept. 11 means more video conferencing and a permanent change in the way business is conducted, Watson said. He commented in a conference call while discussing third quarter earnings.

    Energy futures prices plummeted in international markets Friday, wiping out the previous day's gains as the International Energy Agency in Paris revised its estimates of global demand for oil through 2002 to the lowest level since 1984.
  • 10/12/2001 -- AGA to drop weekly gas storage report, asks EIA to issue data
    The American Gas Association said Friday it will discontinue its weekly report on working natural gas effective Jan. 2 and urged the US Energy Information Administration to issue more timely data instead. AGA explained the report was taking too much staff effort.
  • 10/12/2001 -- Saipem buys other half of European Marine Contractors venture
    Saipem SPA, a unit of Italian company ENI SPA, acquired the remaining 50% of European Marine Contractors Ltd. from Dallas-based Halliburton Co.'s Brown & Root unit.
  • 10/12/2001 -- Brascan Corp. to buy Great Northern's hydro plants
    Canadian real estate developer Brascan Corp. Friday said it will buy Great Northern Paper Inc.'s hydroelectric generating and transmission system in northern Maine for $156.5 million. Brascan said the acquisition will increase to 1,100 Mw the amount of generating capacity owned by its Great Lakes Power Inc. unit, including 28 power plants.

    Energy futures prices rose Thursday in international markets with more signals of a possible production cutback from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The November contract for benchmark US light, sweet crudes jumped 81¢ to $23.34/bbl on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

    Enbridge Inc., Calgary, is buying natural gas gathering, treating, and transmission facilities in south Texas from a unit of Williams Cos. Inc. in a $50 million deal that further expands the firm's "geographic footprint and scale of operations," officials said Thursday.
  • 10/11/2001 -- NERC calls for new electric infrastructure security measures
    Utilities need secure access to telecommunications in the event of disasters, the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) said in testimony to the US Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Telecommunications is just one area that needs congressional action, said the volunteer organization that oversees reliability on the interstate electric transmission system.
