  • 12/11/2001 -- Oil rim found beneath Malampaya gas field off Philippines
    What is likely to be the Philippines' first commercially viable oil deposits have been found by Royal Dutch/Shell Group in a deep well drilled through its existing Malampaya gas reservoir. Initial well tests from the thin oil rim beneath the gas yielded 8,000 b/d.
  • 12/10/2001 -- Canadian Superior spuds first of three British Columbia holes
    Canadian Superior Energy Inc., Calgary, has begun the first of three wells in a natural gas drilling program in northeastern British Columbia. The prospects are in the Farmington, Umbach, and Altares areas.
  • 12/07/2001 -- Canadian Superior cites potential of new blocks off eastern Canada
    Canadian Superior Energy Inc., Calgary, said its recently acquired Mayflower block off eastern Canada has structures analogous to some in worldwide offshore hot spots that may yield reserves of up to 500 million bbl of oil or 5 tcf of natural gas.

    The High Court of Bangladesh has blocked for at least 3 months a government move to allow major oil companies to export natural gas to neighboring India. International oil companies hope permission will be granted in the future.

    Anadarko Petroleum Corp., Shell Offshore Inc., and Kerr-McGee Oil & Gas Corp. flexed their wallets and deepwater expertise as the most active participants at this week's federal Lease Sale 181 for the eastern Gulf of Mexico. But some established deepwater stars were underachievers or didn't even bid in the first lease sale in those waters since 1988.

The North American Electric Reliability Council and the Gas Industry Standards Board have been asked to explain their proposals to generators, marketers, industrial consumers, and investor-owned utilities.

    The US Minerals Management Service said Tuesday that oil companies have bid on 95 of 233 tracts offered in a rare eastern Gulf of Mexico lease sale. It will open the Sale 181 bids, 190 offers from 14 companies, Wednesday morning in New Orleans.

    Total Austral SA, a subsidiary of TotalFinaElf SA, has awarded subsidiaries of J. Ray McDermott International Inc. contracts worth $160 million for two natural gas production platforms and related pipelines to be installed off Argentina.

  • 11/29/2001 -- Canadian oil reserves up strongly in 2000, but gas reserves slip
    The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers said Thursday Canada's crude oil and equivalent reserves increased 400 million bbl in 2000 to 4.8 billion. Conventional oil reserve additions, including offshore Atlantic Canada, were 131% of production in 2000.

    Industrial consumers warned federal regulators market flaws in the PJM Interconnection LLC have prevented large electricity users from benefiting from competition. Problems surfaced after the market opened in 1999, including a lack of liquidity in the forward markets that forces purchases into the more expensive spot market. Very few alternative sellers of power are left in the market.

    The Newfoundland Oil Industry Association said Thursday that it will hold a forum in March to promote the continued exploration of the province's oil and gas resources. It said that stakeholders need to agree on a strategy to prevent a decline in leasing and drilling activity.

    A unit of USX-Marathon Group has begun production from Wolf Lake field in Kenai National Wildlife Refuge 12 miles northeast of Soldotna, Alas.

  • 11/26/2001 -- CDWR asked to pay generators for past due power bills
    The California Independent System Operator invoiced the California Department of Water Resources for $1 billion of power bills accumulated since January 2001. The money is owed the ISO and ultimately to generators and other power companies that sold power to the DWR via the ISO for months without getting paid.
