Borealis inaugurates first Borstar polypropylene plant in Austria


The Borealis Group, one of the world�s leading producers of polyolefin plastics, opened its first Borstar polypropylene plant Friday at its existing production site at Schwechat, Austria.

This marks the introduction of a new generation of polypropylene with superior properties at a competitive production cost and with less burden on the environment, said company officials. Austria�s Minister of Economy and Labour, Martin Bartenstein, pushed the ceremonial button to officially start up the new plant.

The �140 million plant is the most important step for the new generation of polypropylene based on Borstar technology, officials said. It started up in May, ahead of schedule and below budget. The main contractor was Neste Engineering, a unit of the Finnish energy group, Fortum Corp.

Borealis officials said customers and potential licensees have shown keen interest in the Borstar technology which sets new standards in enhanced polyethylene.

Based in Denmark, The Borealis Group produces more than 3 million tonnes of quality polyethylene and polypropylene annually at manufacturing sites and compounding facilities in Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Portugal and Sweden.
