    After a brief respite, electricity-starved California is gearing up for another week of hot weather. The California Independent System Operator (ISO), the agency responsible for the state transmission grid, issued an alert for Friday through Tuesday in anticipation of deficiencies in operating reserves due to high loads and high temperatures.

    Berlinwasser Holdings (BWH), the holding company for the Berlinwasser Group, Berlin, said Tuesday it's selling its 100% interest in the Sekundarrohstoff Verwetungszentrum Schwarze Pumpe GMBH (SVZ) recycling project and related gasification technology to Global Energy Inc. of Cincinnati.
  • 08/09/2000 -- Panda, Entergy sign interconnection agreement
    Entergy Corp. subsidiary Entergy Arkansas Inc. and Union Power Partners LP, a project affiliate of Panda Energy International Inc., Dallas, have signed an interconnection agreement allowing the Panda subsidiary to transmit bulk power from a merchant plant over Entergy's transmission system beginning in 2002. Panda says the agreement is another milestone in the development of the 2720 Mw El Dorado plant in El Dorado, Ark.
  • 08/08/2000 -- Dynegy to acquire 1,700 Mw for $903 million
    Dynegy Inc. will spend $903 million on two fossil-fueled power plants in the Northeast. The purchase will move the big energy merchant closer to its goal of acquiring 10-15%of the nation�s generating capacity. Central Hudson auctioned off the plants in accordance with New York�s deregulation plans.
  • 08/08/2000 -- Nigerian politician calls for oil industry reform
    Nigeria's oil industry regulatory agency, the Department of Petroleum Resources, may be scrapped soon and replaced with an independent petroleum corporation, says the chairman of the House committee on petroleum, West Idahosa. At a meeting with the management team of state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corp., Idahosa said the new commission would draw its funds directly from federal coffers rather than rely on the oil industry operators it's supposed to monitor.

  • 08/07/2000 -- Petronas, PTT consider building Myanmar NGL plant
    The Thai and Malaysian state oil firms have teamed up to study the viability of building a $150 million NGL separation plant in Myanmar. The proposed facility would extract propane and butane from natural gas piped from Yetagun-Myanmar's second largest gas field, located in the Gulf of Martaban-to make LPG.
  • 08/07/2000 -- Pembina pipeline spill contained; cleanup continues
    A crude oil pipeline spill in the Pine River in northeastern British Columbia has been fully contained, and efforts are now focusing on cleanup and long-term recovery planning. Operator Pembina Pipeline Corp., Calgary, expected the line to be back in limited operation today.
  • 08/07/2000 -- LA council to consider $1.7 billion in power projects
    The Los Angeles City Council is expected to take up within the next 2 weeks a $1.7 billion proposal to upgrade and repower 2,300 Mw of electric generating capacity owned and operated by the municipal Department of Water and Power. To help finance the plan, the municipal utility has proposed selling the city's share of the Mojave coal burning plant in Nevada and investing the proceeds in cleaner gas-burning facilities in the Los Angeles basin.

    Heavy use is continuing to take a physical toll on California electric power generation units. The California Independent System Operator declared a Stage 1 power emergency Friday, signaling reserves had fallen below 7%.
  • 08/04/2000 -- Canneft to evaluate Turkmen block
    Canneft Inc., Calgary, has signed an agreement with Turkmengeology in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, to evaluate the Adzhiyap oil and natural gas territory, a 2,000 sq km block in southwest Turkmenistan on the border with Iran and on the Caspian Sea Coast.

    For the fourth day in a row, the California Independent System Operator declared a Stage 2 emergency Thursday after the loss of 400 Mw caused by mechanical failure at a northern California generator. The alert, signaling electrical reserves have fallen below 5%, is in effect until 8 p.m. PST.
  • 08/03/2000 -- NY Power Authority calls off alert
    The New York Power Authority Thursday called an electricity emergency from 11-2:30 p.m. and ordered interruptible customer load reductions of 16.2 Mw. The program ended 2� hr early after temperatures did not reach forecasted highs, a spokesman said.
  • 08/03/2000 -- InterGen sets goal of 10,000 Mw in US
    In a strategic shift, InterGen, the electric power company alliance between Royal Dutch/Shell Group and US engineering company Bechtel is stepping up its investment in the US. InterGen Pres. and CEO Carlos Riva told OGJ Online the company now hopes to have about 40% of its portfolio or up to 10,000 Mw of electric generating capacity planned, under construction, or operating in the US in the next 4 years

  • 08/02/2000 -- Canadian pipeline spills oil into Pine River
    Emergency crews are working to contain a major crude oil pipeline spill in the Pine River in northeastern British Columbia. A 13-mile slick was moving on the river towards the town of Chetwynd, about 60 miles Northeast of Prince George, BC, and posing a threat to its water supply. Chetwynd has a population of about 4,000.
