  • 09/21/2000 -- Erika pumping operations wrap up
    Coflexip Stena Offshore International SA, a French subsidiary of the Coflexip Stena Offshore Group, yesterday wrapped up the delicate subsea operations aimed at pumping out some 11,245 tonnes of heavy fuel from the tanker Erika, which sunk in high seas off the coast of Brittany, France last December.
  • 09/20/2000 -- Plant loss prompts California ISO warning
    With a 1,300 Mw unexpectedly off line in the Northwest curtailing imports into California, the California Independent System Operator (ISO) declared a Stage 1 electrical emergency Wednesday. The ISO called for immediate conservation measures and said it is working to secure additional power in an effort to avoid initiating a Stage 2 emergency.
  • 09/20/2000 -- Oil dumping case wins in appeals court
    The US Court of International Trade ruled Wednesday that the Commerce Department must investigate independent oil producers� complaints that four foreign nations "dumped" oil on the US market in 1998-99. In August 1999 the Commerce Department rejected a petition by Save Domestic Oil (SDO), which alleged Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Mexico, and Iraq released crude in the US market at unfair prices, forcing many small producers out of business when oil prices sank as low as $10/bbl.
  • 09/20/2000 -- Power should be gas supply priority, Sempra chairman argues
    Higher natural gas prices helped touch off the crisis in electricity suffered by consumers and companies in southern California, Sempra Energy Chairman Stephen Baum said Wednesday at the Governor�s Natural Gas Summit. Gas use this summer surpassed the winter peak for the first time ever, Baum said. He appealed for changes in rules that set a low priority on serving power plants with gas in times of crisis.

    Woodside Energy Ltd., Adelaide, has released the details of the development plan for the Echo-Yodel gas-condensate field on Australia's North West Shelf. The field�in 140 m of water, 120 km northwest of Dampier, Australia, and 23 km southwest of the Goodwyn Alpha platform�will be developed via subsea facilities.
  • 09/20/2000 -- Calpine: Expecting higher earnings
    In an uncertain natural gas market, independent power producer Calpine Corp. has set goal of locking up about 65% of its gas supply in 6-7 year contracts and owning about 25% of its needs, Senior Vice-Pres. Diana Knox said Tuesday in Houston. Rising gas prices have 'certainly' made for an 'interesting' market, but Calpine remains focused on the spark spread in setting electricity prices, Knox said at the Dain Rauscher Wessels Energy 2000 Conference.
  • 09/19/2000 -- Talisman buys Canadian gas gathering systems
    Canadian company Talisman Energy Inc. has purchased the Central Foothills Gas Gathering and the Columbia Minehead Gas Gathering systems from subsidiaries of TransCanada PipeLines Ltd., said Talisman Tuesday. TransCanada has been selling noncore properties.

    Opportunities centered on electricity are Williams's best bet for growth, Bill Hobbs, president Energy Marketing & Trading at Williams, told delegates to the Dain Rauscher Wessels Energy Conference 2000 in Houston Tuesday. The company has set a goal of having access to hard assets of 25,000 Mw by 2003 and 40,000 Mw by 2005. Currently, the company has secured 8,900 Mw in five regions.
  • 09/19/2000 -- Nigeria LNG train to begin planned 24-day shutdown
    Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Co. (NLNG) will shut one train at its two-train Bonny Island LNG plant for 24 days in October, said Fred Simeenk, its general manager, production. The closure will begin Oct. 5 and will enable NLNG to perform a baseline inspection and tie in a third train that is under construction. Restart is scheduled for Oct. 28.
  • 09/19/2000 -- Essar, Malaysia International Shipping form LNG shipping JV
    Mumbai-based Essar Shipping has joined hands with Malaysia International Shipping Corp. (MISC) to form a 50-50 joint venture dedicated to the LNG transport. MISC, the national shipping line of Malaysia, is one of the world�s leading owners and operators of LNG tankers, but for Essar, this is a maiden foray into the lucrative but highly capital-intensive field of LNG carriage.
  • 09/18/2000 -- DOE projects to recover coal mine gas
    The US Department of Energy will help fund three projects to capture coal mine methane gas emissions. The National Energy Technology Laboratory, DOE's chief field site for its fossil energy research program, said the Mine Safety and Health Administration estimates 400 US coal mines emit nearly 250 MMcfd of methane.

    With a heat wave expected to propel California electricity demand to a summer-like 44,828 Mw, the California Independent System Operator called a Stage 2 power emergency Monday in preparation for asking interruptible customers to begin load shedding.
  • 09/18/2000 -- Railroad commissioner seeks expansion of Texas' pipeline role
    Texas Railroad Commissioner Tony Garza last week proposed legislative and administrative changes to strengthen the state's pipeline disruption notification program. Garza also urged the US House of Representatives to approve a Senate-passed bill that would maintain the Texas Railroad Commission's role in interstate pipeline inspections. Early this summer he had urged Congress to eliminate restrictions on state agencies in pipeline inspections in Federal Pipeline Safety Act (S 2438).
  • 09/18/2000 -- Phillips LNG technology selected for Trinidad facility
    Partners in a liquefied natural gas plant in Trinidad have selected a proprietary technology belonging to Phillips Petroleum Co., Bartlesville, Okla., for use on two trains to be added to the plant, said Phillips. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Atlantic LNG Co. of Trinidad and Tobago operates the facility, in which BG International, BP, and Spain's Repsol-YPF SA are the three major shareholders.
  • 09/18/2000 -- CNOOC finalizes plan for Dongfang gas field development
    China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC) has nailed down a plan for developing a major natural gas find in the South China Sea. The company said it plans to start commercial production at the Dongfang 1-1 gas field Sept. 15, 2003, with initial flow of 1.6 billion cu m(bcm)/year, expandable to 2.4 bcm/year.

    A heat wave is expected to propel California electricity demand to a summer-like 44,828 Mw Monday, stretching the industry's ability to supply power to the grid. In anticipation of high demand the California Independent System Operator (ISO) has declared today a power watch day, the first in what is expected to be a series this week.

  • 09/15/2000 -- Alliance RTO submits new FERC filing
    The Alliance Regional Transmission Organization sponsors said Friday they have submitted to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) a filing that will comply with all issues raised in FERC's conditional approval orders. The companies are seeking approval to begin operating on or before Dec. 15, 2001.
  • 09/15/2000 -- Companies say Alaskan gas pipeline feasible
    Pipeline firms told the US Senate Energy Committee Thursday that a pipeline to move gas from the Alaskan North Slope to the Lower 48 states is feasible. "With prices hovering around $5/Mcf, the economics have never looked better for Alaskan gas to be delivered to an eager market in the Lower 48," said Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alas.), committee chairman.
