    AES Corp. is about to complete its tender offer for Chilean power generator Gener SA for about $1.3 billion. The Virginia based power company said it purchased 3.5 billion shares of Gener�s common stock representing 61.57% of the issued and outstanding capital stock.

    With natural gas prices at about $10/Mcf compared with $2.44 a year ago, Canadian gas flowing into the US on the new Alliance pipeline won�t help push prices down, said Marshall Adkins, analyst with Raymond James & Associates. Industry observers had expected that new pipeline capacity into the US would bring new resources to the market and keep prices reasonable. He also warns not to expect much near term relief from Canada despite the added pipeline capacity.

    Thailand has begun operation of a west-east onshore pipeline that removes the bottleneck in the flow of natural gas from Burma's Gulf of Martaban. The 154 km, 30-in. Ratchaburi-Wang Noi pipeline enables more production from the offshore Yadana and Yetagun fields.

    Citing better than expected trading results, Williams said its fourth quarter earnings will surpass analysts� projections. The Tulsa-based company said it expects earnings per share to �substantially� exceed the current First Call estimate of 17�/share. No further financial details were available from the company. Williams said it informed the financial community because of investor concern related to publicity surrounding the California electricity market

    El Paso Energy Corp. denied categorically any responsibility for the record gas prices in California in its response to a pair of class action lawsuits filed against it and Sempra Energy. The lawsuits filed Dec. 18 in California Superior Court in Los Angeles allege units of Sempra and El Paso illegally conspired not to compete against each other in the southern California gas market.

    The European Commission transportation ministers this week approved the first package of reform measures that France proposed to the 15 member countries Feb. 15. This was the last EC transport ministers meeting under French presidency. They also agreed to negotiate with the International Maritime Organization regarding a proposed ban on single-hulled vessels.

    A $1.7 billion contract awarded by Blue Stream Pipeline Co. BV, a 50:50 joint venture of Italian company ENI SPA and Russia's Gazprom, to a consortium led by Saipem SPA took effect Dec. 19, said Bouygues Offshore SA, a partner in the consortium.

    Unocal Thailand Ltd. has awarded J. Ray McDermott SA a platform construction contract for the North Pailin development in the Gulf of Thailand. The platform will enable production of 200 MMcfd of gas and 11,000 b/d of condensate.
  • Thu Dec 21 09:12:00 CST 2000 -- Woodside, BHP join forces in North Africa
    Woodside Energy Ltd. and BHP Petroleum Ltd. Thursday took a first step in a long-term cooperative agreement in North Africa. Under the deal, Woodside will pay BHP $22.5 million to take up a 15% stake in the Ohanet risk service contract; a 50% interest in the Boukhechba production sharing contract; and a 50% holding in the Ouest Hassi R�Mel gas study agreement. Woodside said the two oil companies also plan to review further prospects in Algeria and 'future opportunities' in North Africa.

    Production began Wednesday from the $4 billion Sincor heavy crude project in Venezuela, said stakeholder Statoil. The project's partners, led by French company TotalFinaElf SA, are developing a field in the Zuata region, about 200 km from Caracas. Production work began in 1998.
  • Wed Dec 20 12:12:00 CST 2000 -- PG&E proposes pipeline expansion for California market
    With demand for gas and power escalating in California, PG&E Corp. is pursuing an expansion of its interstate Pacific Northwest pipeline system to be completed by late 2002. The existing pipeline has been operating at near 100% of its 2.7/bcfd capacity for much of this year. PG&E will ascertain shipper interest in an additional 200/MMcfd of capacity by calling for preliminary bids for the capacity by Feb. 15, 2001.

    A year after the sinking of the tanker Erika off Brittany, France, and the fuel oil spill that followed, the French Bureau of Investigation on Accidents has released a 300-page report that concluded corrosion allowed the vessel to break up in heavy seas. It said parts of the ship were 30-50% corroded.

    The UK government Monday approved four major North Sea field development projects by BP, Kerr-McGee Corp., and Ranger Oil Ltd. that will total nearly 1 billion. The projects include a 320 million gas pipeline linking the deepwater West of Shetland region with BP's northern North Sea Magnus field installation, and a plan to develop Kerr-McGee's West of Shetland Leadon field.

    The US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has granted preliminary approval for Questar Pipeline Co. to construct a 75-mile natural gas pipeline. The $80 million, 24-in. line will extend from Price, Utah, to Payson, Utah, then 18 miles west where it will tie into a Kern River Gas Transmission Co. line near Elberta, Utah.

    The US Energy Department, the University of Tulsa, and 14 private companies plan a $2.5 million study of wax accumulation in deepwater pipelines using a highly instrumented flow loop test facility. Paraffin deposits can restrict the flow of oil and gas liquids from platforms.
