    Premcor Inc. (formerly Clark Refining Holdings Inc.), St. Louis, Mo., has successfully tested the rated crude oil throughput capacity at its Port Arthur, Tex., refinery, almost a month after a fire shut down the crude distillation unit for a week. The crude distillation unit was recently boosted to 250,000 b/d capacity from 232,000.

    Treasury financings completed by Canadian oil and natural gas exploration and production companies the first 6 months of this year declined by more than $2 billion (Can.), or 65%, vs. the first 6 months of 1999, reports Calgary-based research firm Sayer Securities Inc. Lower-than-usual share prices for energy companies and the risk of further diluting companies' market values are keeping the energy industry from doing more equity financings, says the analyst.

    Woodside Petroleum Ltd., Perth, has solidified plans to take an interest in China�s LNG market with the recent establishment of a joint venture to tender for a $600 million LNG plant at the city of Shenzhen in the southern province of Guandong. Its partners in the tender are Chevron Corp., BHP Petroleum Pty. Ltd., and Korea Gas Corp.
  • 07/24/2000 -- Apache to acquire Occidental's Gulf of Mexico interests
    Houston-based Apache Corp. continued its recent acquisition trend Thursday when it announced it's acquiring for $385 million cash the Gulf of Mexico interests of a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corp., Los Angeles. Apache will acquire interests in 32 fields, half of them operated, on 93 blocks on the Gulf of Mexico's Outer Continental Shelf. Total proven reserves are 56.8 million boe.

    Norway's Statoil this week said it had chosen a semisubmersible production platform as its �principal option� to develop the Kristin gas-condensate field in the Haltenbanken area of the Norwegian Sea. The field partners nonetheless plan to continue evaluating alternative approaches for the discovery, which is part of the four-field Haltenbanken South complex.

  • 07/03/2000 -- Apache, PetroChina to proceed with Zhao Dong field development
    Apache Corp., Houston, and PetroChina Co. Ltd. reported they have agreed to proceed with development of portions of the 49,000-acre Zhao Dong block in Bohai Bay, China. The agreement resolves issues that have delayed the project. It also calls for PetroChina and the China National Petroleum Corp. to quickly obtain final government approval of the phased development plan.

    Texaco Inc. has begun commercial production of oil and natural gas at the Petronius project in the Gulf of Mexico. Installation of the Petronius platform, 130 miles southeast of New Orleans, was completed in early May (OGJ Online, May 5, 2000). The project was once expected to be on stream in early 1999, but a module was lost overboard in late 1998 and had to be rebuilt.

    Canada�s two largest pipeline companies have formed an agreement to work together on plans for a pipeline to move Arctic natural gas south to Canadian and US markets. TransCanada PipeLines Ltd., Calgary, and Westcoast Energy Inc., Vancouver, BC, are working jointly on plans for shipping gas from Alaska's Prudhoe Bay and Canada's Mackenzie Delta and Northwest Territories.

    Conoco Inc., Houston, recently unveiled the details of a 2-year-long research project through which it is trying to develop its own gas-to-liquids (GTL) technology. Company officials are optimistic that their new approach to tackling to the old F-T process will pay off handsomely by driving down costs 20-40% and raising production levels in an arena featuring few players.
