    Conoco and partner Chevron plan to drill an appraisal well later this year on their new Kappa oil and gas discovery in the UK sector of the North Sea. The well cut a 150-ft hydrocarbon column and was logged, but not tested.

    Oil futures prices continued to climb, with NYMEX crude again nearing $30/bbl as OPEC officials indicate no plans to increase production above current 'satisfactory' levels. OPEC members gave a cold shoulder to US officials pushing for the organization to again increase production.
  • 05/16/2000 -- Japan seeks increased Iran crude supplies
    Japan and the US could be headed for a showdown over Japan�s plan to improve economic ties with Iran. Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry is expecting to shortly open talks with Iran to procure more stable crude oil supplies. A ministry official told OGJ the specific agenda has yet to be decided, but the focus of the talks would be on crude supplies and other energy-related topics.

    US drilling activity remained relatively flat, with 830 rotary rigs working during the week ended May 12, down 3 from the previous week but up strongly from 507 during the same period a year ago, Baker Hughes Inc. officials reported Friday. Meanwhile, drilling activity in Canada continued to improve, following the seasonal slowdown from the spring thaw.

    Chevron Corp. subsidiary Chevron San Jorge SA, Buenos Aires, said Tuesday it's purchasing 100% interests in four properties from Alberta Energy Co. Argentina SA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alberta Energy Co. Ltd. The properties include two exploration permits, CNQ 27A and CNQ 31, as well as two production concessions, inclusive of their producing fields, Puesto Prado and Puesto Flores-Estancia Vieja. Production from these fields is 1,200 b/d.

    The average daily value of UK oil production in March reached its highest real level since October 1990, according to the May edition of the Royal Bank of Scotland PLC's Oil and Gas Index. That daily average of �44.8 million was 114.5% more than the average recorded in March 1999, thanks to surging oil prices and a slight weakening of the British pound sterling against the US dollar.

    North American drilling activity registered a healthy increase for the week ended May 5, with 833 rotary rigs working in the US and another 170 in Canada. For the month of April, the worldwide average rig count was 1,553, down 220 or 12% from March but up 397 or 34% from last year, Baker Hughes officials reported Friday.

Proceeds realized from the sale will help TransCanada strengthen its financial position by focusing on reducing debt and overhead costs, said Doug Baldwin, TransCanada's president and CEO.
